Introduction

Stem cells & regenerative medicine is an exciting and fast moving field that brings together experts in biology, medicine, chemistry, engineering and other areas to find solutions to some of the most challenging scientific and medical problems we face today.

Understanding stem cell biology and the mechanisms by which stem cells differentiate into mature lineages forms a fundamental core of the work at the Centre.

Stem cell based therapies are already used to treat patients, including bone marrow transplants for patients suffering from leukaemia, skin grafts for patients with severe burns and more recently corneal grafts for patients suffering from loss of sight due to ocular burns or infection.

There are many more future applications that are not yet a reality. Stem cell biologists and clinicians at our Centre work together to develop new understanding of and treatments for major diseases including cancer, liver failure and degenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease and Parkinson's.

PhD training program
We offer an integrated and structured PhD training program in stem cells and regenerative medicine, incorporating taught and research elements to provide high-level training in theoretical and practical stem cell research.

Combined with our expertise which stretches from basic developmental biology to clinical trials, we offer one of the strongest interdisciplinary research environments for stem cell research and regenerative medicine currently available in the UK.
