Students test their stem cell knowledge

22 September, 2010

CRM's communications officer Ingrid Heersche, together with Glasgow University's scientists Dr Niove Jordainides and Dr Angela McCahill, ran an exhibit 'Stem Cells for Blood Transfusion?' at the Glasgow Science Centre as part of their Celebrating Science in Scotland event.

Over 100 students from secondary schools all over Scotland visited the exhibit where they looked at their own blood using a video microscope and tested their knowledge on stem cells & regenerative medicine in the 'stem cell lab of the future'. The exhibit highlights a £2.9 million research project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, which is looking at turning stem cells into red blood cells that can be used for clinical transfusions. CRM is one of the collaborative research partners in this project.

Bearsden Academy students Anneliese and Eilidh, concentrating on the quiz questions in the picture above, enjoyed the exhibit: 'looking at our own blood was really cool and the quiz was informative with a good choice of challenging questions'.
