School visits

2 February, 2011

CRM researchers are often asked to go into schools to give presentations and help out with stem cell activities. In addition, schools sometimes visit our Centre.

  • In January 2011 secondary school students from Dalkeith High School visited our Centre. Dr Val Wilson gave them an introduction into stem cells & the ethical issues, followed by a lab tour by PostDoc Dr Huw Jones.

In 2010 our researchers were also involved in a number of visits, including:

  • A series of schools in England and Scotland, where Professor Ian Chambers has delivered lessons on stem cells as part of ongoing work with EuroSyStem to develop and pilot a flexible set of activities for wide dissemination on the EuroStemCell website.
  • Inverkeithing High School, where researcher Dr David Hay helped out with a pilot Stem Cell Roadshow organised by the Scottish Stem Cell Network.
  • Tynecastle School and the Stuart Melville School, where Prof Sir Ian Wilmut gave lectures and Q&A sessions on stem cells.
  • Einstein School in Milan, Italy, where Emma Kemp, Communications Manager for EuroStemCell, EuroSyStem and OptiStem, organised a workshop as part of a stem cell day for schools involving 1,000 high school students.
  • Various groups visited the Centre to get an impression of stem cell research 'in action', including University exchange students from America, Secondary school students from the local Mary Erskine School and a group of 12 high school teachers from Denmark.
